Jolly Beach is an all-inclusive resort located on the west coast of Antigua, an English-speaking Caribbean island that used to be a significant British outpost. Today, this island is known for its coral reefs that provide excellent scuba and snorkeling opportunities. The island’s winding coastline is also full of sandy, secluded beaches. The areas of English Harbor and Shirley Heights also have several historical landmarks that give insight into the area’s colonial period. Some attractions that are close to this resort include Jolly Harbour Golf Club, Valley Church Beach, Mosquito Cove Beach and Fort Barrington.
People who wish to fly into Antigua and stay at Jolly Beach should book tickets to the nearest airport, V.C. Bird International. It is located about 10 miles away, in St John’s.
Jolly Beach is set up in front of a one-mile stretch of white sand beach. This property also contains two outdoor pools. The on-site spa offers treatments like stone therapy, wraps, scrubs and deep-tissue massage. The Cyber Cafe at this resort features two computers with internet, printer and scanner (surcharges apply). Guests can dine and drink at the restaurants and bars that are open at different hours throughout the day. Some additional resort amenities include fitness facilities, tour assistance, currency exchange, event catering, audio-visual equipment, small meeting rooms, business services, banquet facilities, 24-hour front desk, security guard, bellhop, wedding services, pool table, available medical assistance, tour assistance, arcade/game room, air-conditioned public areas, dry cleaning/laundry services, parking and gift shop/newsstand. A children’s and teen’s club are available as well.
Jolly Beach contains 462 guestrooms, set up throughout 21 concrete buildings that are two to four stories high. They can be accessed through exterior corridors, but they do not come with elevators. These rooms feature cable television, air conditioning, ceiling fan, opening window, direct-dial phone, voice mail, wake-up calls, in-room safe, balcony, clock radio, extra towels/bedding, hair dryer and available in-room masage. Smoking is permitted; irons, ironing boards and cribs can be provided.
Parents who bring children will not be charged extra for those 2 years of age and below. Children 3-11 can stay under a children’s rate, but anyone 12 and up is under the adult rate.
When guests pay the room rate at Jolly Beach, they will not have to pay extra for the majority of dining and drinking. Basic meals, snacks and afternoon tea are covered, as are house brand alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Taxes and gratuities are included as well. Parents who bring children to this resort can take advantage of the Kidz Club, which offers supervised activities for children 3-12. Its hours of operation are during weekday mornings and afternoons (with a two-hour break in between sessions). Activities offered are sand castle building, beach games, arts and crafts, beach walks, story time and movies.
Participation in many different sports is covered under the room rate. The all-inclusive water sports and equipment featured are windsurfing (with instruction), kayaking, paddle boating, sunfish sailboats (with instruction), surf biking, float mats, snorkeling gear and pool volleyball. Guests are allowed to relax by and swim at the pool and beach, and take advantage of the pool lounge chairs and towel service. The all-inclusive land sports are tennis, basketball, beach volleyball, cricket, beach soccer, horse shoes, croquet, chess and use of fitness center and hammock lounge. Guests may also take lessons in mixology, Caribbean dance and West Indian dialect.
In terms of entertainment, several programs are put on, which range from music or dance shows on an open-air stage; staff and guest talent show; Antiguan floor show; Calypso, steel pan music; and DJ music and dancing.
What’s not included
While basic meals at the on-site restaurants are included in the room rate, some special menu items may require an extra charge. Premium brand-name wines or liquors cost extra, as do certain imported beers. Motorized water sports must be paid for separately, such as water skiing, glass-bottom boat tours, scuba diving and snorkeling tours.
Some other excluded features are Tennis Pro lessons; babysitting services; hair braiding; airport transfers; optional or outside tours and excursions; incidental purchases; telephone, fax and internet access charges; business services; laundry and dry cleaning; video and photo services; and weddings.
